What the checker looks for

The rules come from the open Agent Skills specification that Claude Code, Codex and other agents follow:

FieldRule
nameRequired. 1–64 characters, lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, no leading, trailing or double hyphens. Should match the folder name.
descriptionRequired. Up to 1024 characters. Say what the skill does and when to use it; agents choose skills from this text.
licenseOptional. A license name or a bundled license file.
compatibilityOptional. Up to 500 characters on environment needs, such as required tools or network access.
metadata, allowed-toolsOptional. Extra key-value data, and pre-approved tools (experimental).
BodyThe instructions after the frontmatter. Keep it under about 500 lines and move long material into reference files.

It also flags fields only Claude Code reads, such as disable-model-invocation, when_to_use and context, so you know other agents will ignore them, and catches misspelled fields, which agents skip without any error.

Tips for a skill that actually triggers

  • Put the main use case first in the description. Some agents shorten descriptions when many skills are installed.
  • Use the words people really type: "status update", "weekly report", not only "summarise".
  • One job per skill. Two jobs make the description vague and the skill harder to choose.
  • Test it: ask for the task in three different ways and see if the skill starts. Anthropic's skill-creator automates this.
